October 23, 2014 Meeting

Meeting Agenda:

9:00 AM Non-disruptively Migrating Linux Guests in Their Entirety
z/VM Single System Image (SSI) and Live Guest Relocation (LGR) allow you to migrate Linux systems, but this moves the running systems' memory and CPU to different LPARs. What about the disk? This presentation will describe a solution that also allows you to migrate Linux systems' DASD volumes to different disk hardware. It will start at a high level, then drill down into specific examples. It will also describe real-world customer scenarios utilizing this solution..
The speaker will be Mike MacIsaac of Innovation Data Processing - IDP..

10:30 AM High Availability for RHEL on System z
At this time, Red Hat does not offer a HA solution for non-Intel systems. The session covers general HA concepts, the fundamentals of building a HA solution for RHEL on System z, and an overview of the SNA High Availability Option (HAO) for RHEL on System z. If time permits, well also demonstrate a functioning RHEL cluster and discuss applications of the technology to several common commercial application scenarios. Questions and open discussion are always welcome bring your hard problems.

1:30 PM Secure Hybrid Computing
Patterns exist for a wide variety of business solutions. Modern end-to-end computing, that deals with update, read and analytics against critical business data, whether it is health, financial or intelligence related, shows a common use pattern as well. Distributed systems may want to replicate data for each business use and then require extra systems to coordinate and disseminate the data. However, data processing costs and response time can be dramatically reduced by collaborating or sharing the data across each usage. The IBM mainframe is uniquely capable of satisfying the read, write and analytics of data, while meeting the security, resilience and service level agreements required for business processing. Leveraging a true end to end workflow, from end user device, the System of Engagement and the actual data being requested, system infrastructure can be deployed that satisfies data on a need-to-know basis. This presentation will show some of the different business uses across finance, intelligence, manufacturing and healthcare and the common model that can be deployed at a dramatically reduced cost to alternative infrastructures.
The speaker will be Jim Porell of Vicom Infinity.

3:30 PM CMS Shared File System Administration and Usage
The Shared File System is often considered a mysterious 'black box'. Commands go in, data comes back, but little is understood of what happens in the black box. This session will describe how to configure and use the Shared File System, how space is managed and backup/recovery. Additionally, the Byte File System is discussed.
The speaker will be Rich Smrcina of Velocity Software.

4:45 PM Free-for-All
Members will attempt to answer any reasonable VM or hardware related questions. If you are having a problem and want to find out if others are experiencing it, or you are installing new hardware or software and want to find out what types of problems others have experienced, here is the place to find out.
Members are encouraged to bring ideas for future presentations and speakers to this meeting.
