                      VM (and Linux) Enthusiasts

June 23, 2011 Meeting

Meeting Agenda:

9:00 AM zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager for z/VM
The IBM zEnterprise System introduced firmware-based systems management known as Unified Resource Manager. While much of the focus around this capability has been on managing the zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension (zBX), Unified Resource Manager also offers significant value for z/VM. This presentation will describe Unified Resource Manager from the z/VM management perspective and, connectivity permitting, will include a demonstration of its capabilities.
The speaker will be Romney White of the IBM Corporation, Senior Technical Staff Member, System z Architecture and Technology.

11:00 AM Fit for Purpose
One-size-fits-all doesn't make sense in IT, where certain platforms are better suited to specific types of workloads. This aspect of enterprise computing makes workload decisions of primary importance. In addition, the platform decisions you make today will be relevant to new workloads for many years to come. This session will share what we have learned from our experiences with clients and our own IT operations about the relationship between workloads and platforms. We will cover how selecting a deployment infrastructure using a right fit for purpose approach can yield significant advantages to your organization in terms of operational efficiencies and long-term reduction in cost of operations - for both new and existing workloads. We will apply this approach to a simple workload to demonstrate the value of the process and the value of zEnterprise.
The speaker will be Walt Pesch of the IBM Corporation, System z I/T Architect, Chicago Financial Sector.

This presentation will focus on RACEv, (Right-fitting Applications in a Consolidated Environment), the tool used to determine TCO for Linux on distributed versus Linux on the mainframe. Scott is one of the architects of this methodology and will explain it's origins, it's applications and what customers can expect by teaming with IBM and using the RACEv methodology.
The speaker will be Scott Lundell of the IBM Corporation, a Client Technical Specialist with focus on Linux, z/VM and their applications to System z.

3:30 PM The Penguins Have Landed - Getting Started with Linux on System z at Shelter Insurance
Linux for System z has been available for ten years. This involves running tens or hundreds of Linux virtual servers on a single IBM mainframe. Many companies have exploited this technology for server consolidation, cost savings, green technology and reducing the size of their data center. This presentation describes the path Shelter Insurance is taking to implement and exploit Linux on System z. This will include hardware requirements, the z/VM virtualization hypervisor, virtual networking, software licensing, monitoring, application deployment and cultural challenges. As this implementation is more of a journey that a destination, you will also hear about plans to continue exploiting the virtual environment
The speaker will be Michael J. Giglio of Shelter Mutual Insurance Company, Information Services.
