10:15 AM Coffee Break
10:30 AM CA Cloud Storage for System z
CA Cloud Storage for System z is a new, innovative solution that enables customers to backup and archive their mainframe data to a variety of NFS storage appliances (Riverbed, NetApp, DataDomain) and the Amazon AWS storage clouds (S3 and Glacier). The solution runs on Linux on VM; harnessing the power, security and cost-effectiveness of the IFL to move large amounts of data to and from the mainframe. CA Cloud Storage for System z can deliver significant cost savings to customers as it enables them to retire large amounts of physical tape and DASD as data is backed up and archived to less expensive, off-platform storage. The solution is designed with security in mind, leveraging end-to-end encryption of data in transit and data at rest. Cloud Storage for System z also enables new, cost-effective disaster recovery options.
The speaker will be Scott Arnett of CA Technologies..

1:30 PM Operational Monitoring and Automation of a System z-based Cloud Environment (z/VM and Linux on System z)
There are many areas of monitoring and systems management for System z-based cloud environments running on z/VM and Linux on System z:
  • performance monitoring and management
  • resource management
  • operational monitoring
  • automated alerting and recovery.
  • This session will give an overview of what each of these areas encompasses and the solutions available to help you. It will then go into more detail about operational monitoring and automation, including IBM's solution in this space: Operations Manager for z/VM. Live demos will be shown if time and access permits.

3:15 PM Backup and Recovery of a System z-based Cloud Environment (z/VM and Linux on System z)
Backup and recovery are critical to a System z-based cloud environment running on z/VM and Linux on System z. This session will review the advantages and disadvantages of each of the various approaches to backup and recovery for z/VM and Linux on System z:
  • backing up from z/OS
  • backing up from z/VM
  • backing up from Linux
  • The speaker will then discuss and demonstrate (if time and access permits) one of the IBM solutions that fills one piece of the puzzle: Backup and Restore Manager for z/VM.
