CAVMEN - Chicago Area
                      VM (and Linux) Enthusiasts

April 12, 2012 Meeting

Meeting Agenda:

9:00 AM zVPS Version 4 Update
Velocity Software focuses on FULL performance management, including performance analysis, capacity planning, chargeback and operations. This presentation looks at how zVPS Version 4 targets each area to make the "z" platform the best platform for your business.
The speaker will be Barton Robinson of Velocity Software, Inc., Chief Architect.
10:15 AM Coffee Break
10:30 AM zPRO Update
Recognizing the competition to z/VM is first: VMWare, and 2nd: lack of skills and education, zPRO is the browser based front end on z/VM to make z/VM more marketable to both management and your "new" systems programmers. Including web based systems management, directory management, security management, and even cloning, zPRO functionality is a requirement for z/VM's future success.
The speaker will be Barton Robinson of Velocity Software, Inc., Chief Architect.
11:45 PM Lunch Break
12:30 PM Linux on z Update
The speaker will present a brief update of recent developments in the Linux under z/VM area.
The speaker will be Paul Augustyniak of the IBM Corporation, Linux on System z New Workload Leader, North America IOT.

12:45 PM Administration and Vendor Announcements
1:00 PM Managing Big Data
Unstructured data growth is in an explosive state, and has no signs of slowing down. Costs continue to rise along with new regulations mandating longer data retention. Moreover, disparate silos, multivendor storage assets and less than optimal use of existing assets have all contributed to accidental architectures. And while they can be key drivers for organizations to explore incremental, innovative solutions to their data challenges, they may provide only short-term gain. This presentation will outline the business benefits of a truly unified, integrated platform to manage all block, file and object data that allows enterprises can make the most out of their storage resources. Well explore the benefits of an integrated approach to multiprotocol file sharing, intelligent file tiering, federated search and active archiving; how to simplify and reduce the need for backup without the risk of losing availability; and the economic benefits of an integrated architecture approach that leads to lowering TCO by 35% or more.
The speaker is Thomas Rivera, Sr. Technical Associate, File, Content & Cloud Solutions, Hitachi Data Systems.

2:30 PM z/VM Performance Short Subjects
In this brief presentation the speaker will review a number of short topics related to z/VM performance management, including goal setting, change control, hints and tips, collection of MONWRITE data, how to transmit MONWRITE data to IBM, and how to prepare for a performance PMR.
The speaker will be Brian Wade of the IBM Corporation, Senior Software Engineer z/VM Performance.

3:15 PM Coffee Break
3:25 PM z/VM Performance Case Studies
This sequence of short presentations illustrates a number of different situations and problems weve seen as weve handled various z/VM performance questions. The sequence starts with a review of how to collect MONWRITE data, which is crucial to analyzing performance concerns. It then moves to studies of systems that are performing well and others that are not performing so well. Analysts findings are illustrated using various reports from z/VM Performance Toolkit.
The speaker will be Brian Wade of the IBM Corporation, Senior Software Engineer z/VM Performance.

4:25 PM Coffee Break
4:30 PM A Tour of www.vm.ibm.com
From time to time we're asked to talk about our content hosting and content management techniques for www.vm.ibm.com, where IBM hosts the majority of its z/VM-related web content. Our site uses a CMS-based web daemon to serve the pages, and the CMS Shared File System to hold the content, and Rexx and Pipelines tools for site management. This short discussion illustrates all of those items and more.
The speaker will be Brian Wade of the IBM Corporation, Senior Software Engineer z/VM Performance.

5:00 PM Free-for-All
Members will attempt to answer any reasonable VM or hardware related questions. If you are having a problem and want to find out if others are experiencing it, or you are installing new hardware or software and want to find out what types of problems others have experienced, here is the place to find out.
Members are encouraged to bring ideas for future presentations and speakers to this meeting.
