                      VM (and Linux) Enthusiasts

April 22, 2004 Meeting

Final Meeting Agenda:

9:00 AM z/VM Update
What's new with z/VM? Catch the latest breaking news on z/VM product enhancements. This session will provide a high level overview of the new z/VM Version 5 product announcement. z/VM V5.1 offers new leading edge virtualization capabilities in addition to a new pricing model that will help enterprises more easily exploit the on demand capabilities of zSeries virtualization technology. The value of Linux on z/VM will receive particular attention. A look to the future of z/VM development will also be provided.
The speaker will be Mr. Reed Mullen of the IBM Corporation.
10:30 AM Coffee Break
10:45 AM zSeries Server Update
IBM recently announced the eServer zSeries Model 890 along with new functions for the z990. z/VM Version 5.1 requires a 64-bit capable server, and the z890 and z990 offer the most advanced technologies available for z/VM V5.1 exploitation. The z890 provides lower entry capacity for a z/Architecture-capable server than previously available. This session will highlight the z890 product and the z990 enhancements.
The speaker will be Mr. Reed Mullen of the IBM Corporation.
12:00 PM Lunch Break
1:00 PM Administration and Award Presentation
1:15 PM Linux Update
The speaker will present a brief overview of recent developments in the Linux under z/VM area.
The speaker will be Mr. James Savoie of the IBM Corporation.
1:30 PM Linux on zSeries User Experiences
The speakers will present their experiences of serving up mainframe DB2 data to the distributed webspace via DB2 Connect in the Linux/390 environment. They will briefly explore the old and complex architectures of the past, a z/OS based solution, and the Linux based solution. They will also discuss the benefits of implementing the Linux based solution as well as how they are addressing High Availability, Disaster Recovery, and the lessons learned in configuring z/VM and Linux on the zSeries platform.
The speakers will be Mr. Brian Diddens and Mr. James Peddycord of Northern Trust.
3:00 PM Coffee Break and Drawing
3:15 PM Sharing Kernel and Application Materials on Linux for zSeries
As sites continue to implement and maintain many more Linux for zSeries servers they begin to wonder how they can better streamline the maintenance of their many images. William Scully, Senior Systems Programmer for Computer Associates, presents a surprisingly simple technique for sharing the object code for both the kernel and applications running under Linux for zSeries. Using this technique may prove useful in reducing the human costs in rolling out service to large numbers of Linux servers running on the mainframe.
The speaker will be Mr. William P. Scully of Computer Associates.
4:45 PM Free-for-All
Members will attempt to answer any reasonable VM or hardware related questions. If you are having a problem and want to find out if others are experiencing it, or you are installing new hardware or software and want to find out what types of problems others have experienced, here is the place to find out.
5:45 PM Second Annual CAVMEN Reunion
